Project Objective
Wendel Duchscherer is retained as the structural and civil engineer on this $160 million, fast-track project lead by Seneca Gaming Corporation and
JCJ Architecture. The project includes:
- An 11-story, 220 room hotel
- An 8-story, 1,800 car parking structure
- A 2-story spa/pool facility
- A 165,000 sq. ft. casino addition
This project, nestled in the picturesque hills of the Sothern Tier of New York State, is complicated by the fact that the facility is built into the side of an adjacent mountain and will require diversion of existing streams that flow down the mountain and the retention of approximately 30‘ of soil on the rear of the facility.
Solution
Even the flattest part of the project site has a grade change of 30 to 40 feet.
To solve this problem, portions of the hotel and gaming space are built into the hillside. The retaining walls around the lower space needed to be over 30 feet tall. High-rise portions of the project are supported on pile foundations to rock, which
is approximately 70’ to 100’ below grade, and low rise portions of the facility bear on conventional spread footings. The parking garage is precast concrete structure, and the hotel tower and other low-rise portions of the facility are framed in structural steel. Wendel Duchscherer’s role on the parking garage was to design the foundation system, as the super structure is a design-build project using a specialty precast concrete contractor.
