Quebecor World Chilled Water and Compressed Air
Energy Efficiency Study

client:

New York State Energy Research & Development Authority (NYSERDA)

location:

Depew, New York

Project Objective
In order to increase plant profitability and reduce their energy costs, Wendel Duchscherer performed a NYSERDA Flexible Technical Assistance (FlexTech) study and implemented various measures at Quebecor World, an 800,000 sq. ft. printing facility.

Solution
A schematic design and equipment selection were performed. Potential grants totaling over $500,000 will be obtained through the NYSERDA Commercial/Industrial Performance Program (CIPP) and Retro Commissioning Incentive, for a portion of the equipment and project costs. Measures evaluated and implemented include:

Chilled Water System Modifications
$100,000 estimated savings - 3.0 year payback
- Centralized multiple systems
- Incorporated a variable volume circulation
  system
- Enabled chiller free cooling possibilities
- Replaced oversized chiller with a properly
  sized and more efficient chiller

Compressed Air System
$140,000 estimated savings - 1.2 year payback
- Replaced discharge nozzles with more
  efficient nozzles
- Installed system pressure controls
- Installed automatic air compressor staging
  controls
