Mobility Hubs
There are times when a series of Mobility Hubs, strategically located in multiple areas, are more appropriate in meeting the mobility needs of an area than a single large intermodal transfer center. Such was the case in Mystic, Connecticut.
After client interview and comments received from public meetings, the URS/Wendel team recommended the use of Mobility Hubs as the best way to meet the mobility needs as well as enhance the Mystic Experience for visitors. These Hubs have the technological and wayfinding components to provide this two-fold service. These Hubs were further developed into major and minor prototypical Hubs since not all locations require the same amenities. Major Hubs will contain all program elements. Minor Hubs will afford most of the program elements.
The Mobility Hubs are small enough to fit on a variety of different site locations, flexible enough to add or delete specific components, and at the same time maintain a consistent presence as a wayfinding icon the traveling public will consistently recognize. They reflect and incorporate the existing Mystic streetscaping elements. The Hubs also blend into the local building and landscaping context while maintaining sustainable ideals such as daylighting and recycled materials.
In plan, the major hubs were designed around a center kiosk, containing all the technology and information regarding the Mystic Experience, making it the focus of the design. The major Hub windscreen walls are set back from this kiosk allowing access on all sides.
To meet the diverse needs of operational flexibility and aesthetic consistency, the hubs were designed as a set of components, which include base, columns, walls, roof, and landscaping. Each is able to integrate as a whole, but also act independently.
