ASHRAE Level 1 Audits are commonly known as walk-through audits. The intent of this level of audit is to determine if the potential for energy efficiency improvements exist. A simple letter report is typically provided that describes the opportunities for improvement.
ASHRAE Level 2 Audits are detailed energy audits. The intent of this level of audit is to give the building owner a list of energy conservation measures that includes detailed savings and implementation cost estimates. The level 2 Audit may include a recommendation for a “group” of energy conservation measures that appear to meet the owner’s payback criteria.
ASHRAE Level 3 Audits are also known as investment grade energy audits. The level 3 audit includes only the measures from the level 2 audit that the owner intends to implement. The savings and costs to implement the project are accurate enough that the owner can make a final decision regarding implementation. If the project is implemented using an Energy Savings Performance Contract, the results of a level 3 audit are guaranteed.
