Complete Streets

Complete streets are those designed and operated to enable safe access and travel for all users. Pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists, transit users, and travelers of all ages and abilities will be able to move along the street network safely. The concept is to provide more transportation choices; support existing communities through transit-oriented, mixed-use development and land recycling (that is, reuse of abandoned, vacant, or underused properties for redevelopment); and value communities by investing in healthy, safe, and walkable neighborhoods. Complete Streets are essential to creating successful projects that enhance the viability and vitality of communities.

Wendel has been bringing complete streets to communities for over twenty years. Lessons learned through these projects help us provide inspiration and guidance to regional and mid-size urban centers. With our in house planning and design expertise in transportation, stormwater management, transit and landscape architecture as well as grant administration and financial planning,
we offer the complete package needed to implement a successful complete streets solution.

Some recent examples.

The James Street Road Diet focuses on a former commuter route connecting Eastwood and points further east to downtown Syracuse. As traffic moved to the parallel I-690, the City wanted to implement a “Road Diet” strategy and reduce the number of travel lanes from four to two. The goal for James Street was to balance its “Commuter” and “Local Street” functions providing people the opportunity to ride their bikes, walk their dogs, push a shopping cart, catch a bus, and chat with their neighbors. The solution integrates signal coordination to reduce travel delays for vehicles; transit enhancements including bus pull-offs, priority signals and shelters; bike and pedestrian improvements and landscape enhancements.

A private developer in the City of Buffalo was converting warehouse and vacant buildings into Larkinville, a new mixed use campus in an underdeveloped portion of the City. The Seneca Street Complete Streets project links activity centers within the campus for cars, pedestrians, bikes and transit riders. As a public/private partnership, the project benefits the City through private funding of capital improvements, long term maintenance of the improvements and advancement of the City’s complete streets initiative. Benefits for the Developer included being able to define the character of the improvements, implementing the project on their schedule, incorporate innovative elements and leverage with city for future developments.
