Traffic Engineering

Transportation is more than just traveling from point A to point B. It is about linking communities and businesses, developing environmentally sensitive growth strategies, and improving economic prosperity. Without it, the rhythm of commerce, a city, and world would miss a beat. With an overwhelming need for efficient transportation systems outpacing available funding, we must optimize operation of existing transportation infrastructure.  Our experienced staff of traffic engineers is well trained in the use of the latest transportation analysis software to analyze roundabouts, traffic signals and multi-modal transportation systems. Our solutions balance the needs of all modes for access, mobility, and safety.

Recently, Wendel assisted the City of Buffalo upgrade their aging time based signal system on several key corridors as part of the Buffalo Energy Performance and Traffic Signal Upgrade Project. In addition to commuter traffic, these corridors are used for incident management on parallel expressways and emergency evacuation routes. The solution included installation of digital controllers tied to a central command center using fiber optic and microwave radio. The City now has the capability to change signal operations to accommodate peak commuter periods, divert expressway traffic during incidents and provide additional emergency evacuation corridors.

Wendel’s traffic engineering services include utilizing industry recognized software to review, model and develop transportation solutions for clients. One example was the Expansion of the Walden Galleria Mall. This expansion 250,000 square foot expansion would include construction of new mall shops through the existing Sears Store and development of new anchor tenant pads. The Traffic Impact Study and Parking Analysis would be used as supporting documentation for the SEQR determination as well as site plan approval of the project by the Town of Cheektowaga and other involved agencies. The traffic study demonstrates that the existing street network has sufficient excess capacity to accommodate additional traffic or identify solutions to mitigate potential traffic impacts.
